The government has taken an initiative to provide advanced training to 80,000 lawyers in phases to enhance their professional skills, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman said on Sunday.
Discussions are ongoing with a country in this regard, the minister told an event at Dhaka Club in the capital.
He was speaking as the chief guest at “Transformation of Legal Practice through Emerging Technologies and AI”, organised by young barristers of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
The minister said the existing enrollment examination system of the Bar Council is complex for those returning to the country with law degrees from abroad in the English medium, as questions in this system are formulated in Bengali.
“This needs reform,” he said.
He also noted that new barristers are very talented, but due to the complexity of the Bar Council enrollment examination, many talented lawyers are leaving to take jobs in various companies.
“We must create opportunities for talented new lawyers to apply their professional skills in the Supreme Court,” Asaduzzaman added.
Emphasising an increase in budget allocation for the judiciary, the law minister said courts generate over Tk 15,000 crore annually through various court fees and stamp sales.
“In contrast, the entire judiciary receives a national budget allocation of only Tk 2,200 crore. This needs to be increased,” he said.
