Govt. removes Barishal University VC, Pro-VC and treasurer

Government on Wednesday removed Barishal University Vice Chancellor Professor Shuchita Sharmin, Pro-VC Professor Golam Rabbani and treasurer Prof Md Mamunur Rashid. The secondary and higher education division of the Education Ministry issued notifications in this regard, official sources said.

Meanwhile, in another notification, Prof Mohammad Toufiq Alam of Rajshahi University was appointed as the interim Vice Chancellor of Barishal University.

Students of Barishal University has been agitating since early May due to alleged administrative mismanagement. On Monday night, 13 students had gone on a hunger strike and Tuesday saw five of the students falling ill. As a result of the protests, the Barishal-Kuakata highway was blocked, causing distress and sufferings to bay-bound tourists and locals.

Dr Md Taufiq Alam has been appointed as the acting vice chancellor of Barishal University. He is a professor at the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Rajshahi University.

Dr Shuchita Sharmin has been reinstated as a professor in Dhaka University. She was appointed as the first female VC of Barishal University in September last year.
