BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday expressed doubt over the interim government’s impartiality when it came to conducting the trials of Awami League leaders and activists.
He asserted that the BNP, as the primary victim of Awami League’s “viciousness”, should have the authority to oversee any such proceedings.
Speaking at a youth rally organised by associate bodies of the BNP, Khosru said, “The interim government is not reliable when it comes to conducting impartial trials of Awami League members.”
The BNP senior leader touched upon last year’s student-led protests, claiming that, if the demonstrations had failed, most of its participants would have quietly returned to their daily lives, but BNP leaders and activists would have faced the brunt of state-sanctioned retaliation.
“BNP has been the biggest victim of the Awami League’s repressive actions. Therefore, it is BNP that holds the rightful position to conduct the trials of those responsible,” he stated.
Addressing ongoing political reform efforts, Khosru rejected claims that there is a lack of consensus among political parties.
“Who are you [the interim government] to say there whether there has been consensus or not?” he questioned. “If unity is yet to be achieved, it is the people of this country who will ultimately decide on the reforms — not you.”
