What began as an ordinary day turned tragic for Shohel Molla, a 35-year-old small business owner, who was shot dead during Wednesday’s violent clashes in Gopalganj city between Awami League (AL) supporters and law enforcement personnel.

Shohel, who ran a mobile accessories shop in the heart of the city, had reportedly stepped out to witness the unfolding unrest near Poura Park. According to his family, he was not a participant in the rally or protest — only a bystander, recording the incident on his phone.

“He was just filming what was happening — nothing else,” said his grieving father, Idris Ali Molla, holding back tears. “He didn’t belong to any party. He was a hardworking man trying to earn a living.”

Eyewitnesses confirmed that Shohel was standing at a distance when he was hit by a bullet. Locals rushed him to the Gopalganj 250-bed Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.

The circumstances surrounding Shohel’s death remain unclear. His family alleges he was shot by law enforcement during their attempt to disperse the crowd. No official statement has confirmed who fired the shot.

“We want justice. My son didn’t deserve this,” Idris Ali added. “He had no weapon, no slogan — only a mobile phone in his hand.”

Shohel leaves behind a wife and two young children. His shop — now shuttered — stands as a silent reminder of the life cut short amid political violence.

Shohel’s name is one of at least four casualties confirmed by hospital sources from Wednesday’s clashes, which erupted following an attack on a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally and escalated into day-long violence across the city.

As Gopalganj remains under curfew, tension continues to simmer. Meanwhile, Shohel’s family prepares for his funeral — and hopes that amid the chaos, their son’s death will not go ignored.
