In the wake of violent clashes surrounding an NCP rally and armed forces deployment in Gopalganj on Wednesday, Bangladesh Army has issued a statement urging the public to remain vigilant against rumours and continue cooperating with law enforcement.
“On July 16, 2025, a group of unruly individuals carried out coordinated acts of terrorism in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila during a political rally,” it said. “Initial reports indicate several police personnel and journalists were injured, while key urban infrastructure and government vehicles were vandalized and set ablaze.”
“As the situation rapidly deteriorated, the Bangladesh Army and local police immediately intervened, bringing the unrest under preliminary control. During the political gathering, attackers again assaulted the stage and launched a separate attack on the district jail, causing extensive damage,” the statement reads. “When army personnel attempted to disperse the mob through loudspeaker warnings, the assailants retaliated by hurling cocktails and bricks, forcing troops to use measured force in self-defense. Subsequently, joint operations by the Army, BGB, and police successfully scattered the rioters.”
The statement went on to say: “Under army supervision, individuals sheltering at the Gopalganj Superintendent of Police office were relocated to Khulna. Law enforcement agencies ultimately restored order through professional and restrained measures.”
The army’s statement said that the situation in Gopalganj has now normalised, but the curfew imposed yesterday remains in effect, adding that “the Army, BGB, police, RAB, and other agencies continue coordinated operations. The military commended Gopalganj residents for their exceptional patience and cooperation during yesterday’s political violence, urging the public to remain vigilant against rumors and continue supporting law enforcement.”
“The Bangladesh Army reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to national sovereignty and public security,” it concludes.
