Mamun Al Mujahid, a notorious gangster also known as Sumon (35), managed to escape from police custody after a violent ambush by his associates in Gazipur’s Sripur area on Thursday night. The attackers, arriving on motorbikes, ambushed the police officers and freed the suspect while causing extensive damage to two police vehicles.
The incident took place around 8:30 PM on the Sripur-Mawna Road, near the Tengra intersection. Mamun, a resident of Pathantek village in Barami Union, had been arrested based on intelligence reports about his involvement in several arms-related criminal cases.
During the attack, five members of the District Detective Branch (DB) were injured. The injured officers included Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Nazmul Islam (40), Shafayat Osman (34), Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Emadadul Haq Khan (37), Shahidul Islam (38), and Emadadul Haq (48). They were promptly treated at Sripur Upazila Health Complex.
According to police sources, the incident unfolded after Mamun was initially arrested near Trimohoni Bridge in Kawraid Union, following a tip-off from intelligence sources. As officers were transporting the suspect, Mamun’s associates launched a series of attacks in various areas, including Barami and Satkhamaire CCDB regions, before cornering the police at Tengra.
ASI Shahidul Islam, one of the injured officers, explained that the attackers initially struck in the Barami area, attempting to free the suspect, before continuing their assault at other locations. At Tengra, they overpowered the officers, physically assaulted them, and freed Mamun.
Sripur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Mohammad Abdul Barik, confirmed that the DB had arrested Mamun at around 7:00 PM and had dispatched additional police forces after the attack occurred.
Police are now investigating the incident and making efforts to track down Mamun and his associates.
