Milestone tragedy: Funeral parade held for Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam

A funeral parade and prayer were held for Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam, the pilot of the fighter jet that crashed into a Milestone School and College building in Uttara, Dhaka on Monday.

The ceremony took place at the Kurmitola Airbase in Dhaka on Tuesday, with Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and the heads of the three armed forces in attendance.

A funeral parade is a military or formal farewell ceremony usually held after the death of a military officer. Flight Lieutenant Toukir Islam tragically lost his life in the aircraft crash on July 21, after initially being taken to Combined Medical Hospital in Dhaka Cantonment for treatment. He passed away later in the ICU. 

After the funeral parade, his body was being transported to Rajshahi by a Bangladesh Air Force helicopter. The helicopter is scheduled to land at Rajshahi Cantonment at 3:55pm.

On Monday, just after 1pm, an F-7 BGI training aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into a building at Milestone School and College in Uttara’s Diyabari area. The crash resulted in 31 fatalities, with over 170 people injured.

In the wake of this tragic incident, the government declared a one-day national mourning on Tuesday.
