Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival, renowned for championing horror, supernatural and fantasy cinema, has once again featured the work of Bangladeshi filmmaker Nuhash Humayun.
His latest horror web series, ‘Dui Shaw’, had its festival debut on June 30, with the director present in person for the screening.
Dui Shaw marks Nuhash’s third showcase at Fantasia, following the acclaim of his previous works ‘Pett Kata Shaw’, ‘Moshari’ and ‘Foreigners Only’.
The premiere drew a packed house, with tickets completely sold out. A second screening is now scheduled for 1 August to meet demand.
Known as North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia has become a recurring platform for Nuhash’s growing body of work.
While festival nominations are a familiar honour for Nuhash, this year’s recognition came with an added touch — a heartfelt letter from the organisers, which left a deep impression on him.
In a statement posted to its official Facebook page, Fantasia praised the director, saying, “The creatively inventive young filmmaker Nuhash has taken horror projects in Bangladesh to a whole new frontier. In the second season as well, he brings chilling stories.”
According to Nuhash, the momentum of his horror shorts and features has led to a shift in how his work is received, rather than submitting projects for consideration, festival curators now often approach him directly with personal interest.
Dui Shaw breaks away from traditional supernatural themes, instead examining contemporary fears and the psychological unease that lurks beneath the surface of everyday life. The anthology consists of four distinct stories — ‘Waqt’, ‘Bhaggo Bhalo’, ‘Antara’, and ‘Besura’.
Nuhash’s Moshari and Foreigners Only previously won awards at Fantasia, cementing his reputation as a rising voice in global genre cinema. This year’s edition of the festival runs from July 16 to August 3.
