Frank Mill, a member of West Germany’s 1990 World Cup-winning squad, has died at the age of 67. His former clubs Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen confirmed the news on Tuesday.

Mill passed away due to complications following a severe heart attack he suffered in May. Although he did not feature in any matches during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, he was part of the squad that lifted the trophy.

He earned 17 international caps for West Germany and also won a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. At club level, Mill won the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund and played for several clubs, including Borussia Mönchengladbach and Rot-Weiss Essen.

In a tribute, his hometown club Essen described Mill as “a legend” and “an ambassador for football across the country”.

Mill is the second member of West Germany’s 1990 World Cup-winning team to pass away this year, following the death of Andreas Brehme, who scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina.
