Post, Telecommunications and ICT Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam on Tuesday said the government plans to introduce franchise post offices and post pick-up points through entrepreneurs under the supervision of the Postal Department.
He said the process of selecting suitable locations for these facilities is currently underway. He made the remarks while replying to a written starred question from Jamaat MP M Mahbubur Rahman (Belal), elected from Rangpur-3.
The Minister said the government has taken a series of initiatives to modernise and expand postal services across the country.
He said several citizen-focused services are already being delivered through the postal network. These include home delivery of land documents, bulk delivery of passports, and home delivery of driving licences.
To meet rising demand from the e-commerce sector, Bangladesh Post Office is also working on plans to introduce cash-on-delivery services for online products, he added.
He informed Parliament that under Dhaka Metropolitan Police traffic management activities, video-based traffic violation notices and other alerts are being sent to citizens through postal services.
To support the growing e-commerce and f-commerce sectors, 14 fulfilment centres have been set up in different parts of the country.
These centres will support product collection, storage, processing, booking, sorting, transportation and distribution.
The Minister said work is also underway to expand real-time online tracking and tracing through the Domestic Mail Monitoring System (DMS) software.
He added that Bangladesh Post Office continues to provide the country’s lowest-cost postal and parcel delivery services. It also offers affordable international delivery through Express Mail Service (EMS).
He further said seasonal fruits from major producing regions are being transported safely and quickly at low cost through postal services.
He expressed hope that once the ongoing initiatives are fully implemented, postal services will become more efficient, accessible and beneficial for the public.
