Former state minister and Awami League leader Kamal Ahmed Majumder has been admitted to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in the capital after falling ill in jail.

Prison officials said Majumder’s blood pressure and blood sugar levels dropped on Thursday evening while he was in Keraniganj Central Jail.

He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), but due to the unavailability of a bed, he was later transferred to NICVD around 11pm.

Bilal Hossain, a prison guard who accompanied him, said, “Around 8pm, Kamal Majumder became unwell. The jail’s medical team examined him and referred him to DMCH. As there were no beds available, he was brought to the cardiac institute where doctors began primary treatment.”

Kamal Majumder, a lawmaker from Dhaka-15 constituency, was arrested from his Gulshan residence on October 18 last year following the fall of the Awami League-led government amid mass protests. He has been in custody since then.

Kamal is an accused in several cases, including murder and attempted murder, one of which was filed at Banani Police Station.

The authorities had placed him on remand for interrogation in connection with the charges.

Majumder was elected four consecutive times from Dhaka-15 since 2008 and served as the state minister for industries in 2018.
