Former national team cricketer Belayet Hossain dies at 70

Mir Belayet Hossain, former wicketkeeper-batter of the Bangladesh national cricket team, has passed away at the age of 70.

He breathed his last on the evening of 23 july in Mymensingh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed the news and expressed its deep condolences to his bereaved family.

Belayet represented Bangladesh between 1977 and 1984 and was part of the squad in the 1979 ICC Trophy. Known for his fearless batting, he was a prominent figure in domestic cricket throughout the 1980s.

At club level, he played for Abahani, Kalabagan, Rupali Bank, Agrani Bank and Dhanmondi Club. He also featured in the National Cricket Championship for Mymensingh district.

After his playing career, Belayet remained closely involved with the game. He served as a BCB-appointed match referee, officiating in 79 first-class matches, 81 List A games and one T20 fixture. He also worked as a regional development manager under the board’s structure.

In its statement, the BCB paid tribute to his contributions to the game and extended sympathy to his family. The Bangladesh Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association also expressed their sorrow at his passing.
