A Munshiganj court has rejected bail and granted a seven-day remand for former member of Parliament Faisal Biplob in connection with the Sajal murder case.

On Tuesday morning, Judge Ashikur Rahman of Munshiganj’s 1st Judicial Magistrate Court issued the order after hearing arguments on a police petition seeking a 10-day remand.

Amid tight security from the army and police to prevent mob violence, Biplob was brought to the court at 8:30am and produced before the judge at 9:05am.

Defence lawyers Shahin Mohammad Amanullah and Hasan Mridha argued against the remand and sought bail, while public prosecutor Abdul Halim and assistant prosecutor Nur Hossain presented the state’s case for remand.

After a 20-minute hearing, the court approved the seven-day remand.

Biplob was immediately taken to district jail following the order. Shortly afterward, over 500 protesters gathered outside the court demanding his execution, holding him responsible for the August 4 violence in Munshiganj last year that left three dead.

Protesters noted that court proceedings typically begin after 10am, expressing surprise at the early hearing.

The former MP from Munshiganj-3 was arrested from Manipuri Para in Dhaka on June 22 and produced in court the next day. He was transferred to Munshiganj Jail on June 30.

Biplob faces charges in three murder cases and two attempted murder cases related to last year’s August 4 violence in Munshiganj.
