Former Awami League MP and popular singer Momtaz Begum was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police around 11:45pm on Monday from a residence behind Star Kabab in the capital’s Dhanmondi.
DMP Spokesperson Mohammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the information in a late-night text message.
He stated that Momtaz was taken to the DB office for questioning.
She faces multiple cases in Dhaka and Manikganj, including charges of murder and attempted murder.
Police will seek a remand when she is produced in court on Tuesday.
Momtaz had been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year.
She was nominated as a reserved women’s seat MP in the 9th National Parliament (2008) and later elected from Manikganj-2 in the 2018 general election. She contested again in the 2024 election but lost to independent candidate Dewan Zahid Ahmed. After her defeat, she remained largely inactive in local Awami League politics.
