Former Gaibandha mayor Jahangir Kabir arrested

Police have arrested Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir, the former mayor of Gaibandha Municipality and vice president of the Gaibandha district Awami League, in connection with multiple criminal charges.

A team from the Detective Branch (DB) of police detained him from a residence in the capital’s Hatirpool area late on Sunday night (20 July).

According to police sources, Kabir is facing three separate cases. One of them was filed under the Explosive Substances Act on 18 August last year over the vandalism and arson attack at the Gaibandha district BNP office. He was on bail in that case.

The other two cases were lodged on 26 August 2023 and 22 May 2025. Both cases involve allegations of attempted murder, arson, and use of explosives. Kabir had been absconding in connection with these two cases.

Speaking to the media, Officer-in-Charge of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station Shahinur Rahman Talukder said, “There were arrest warrants against Jahangir Kabir in two cases filed under the Explosive Substances Act and for attempted murder. He had been in hiding. He will be produced before the court on Monday.”
