A court in Manikganj has placed former captain of the national cricket team and ex-Awami League Member of Parliament for Manikganj-1 constituency Naimur Rahman Durjoy on a four-day remand in a case related to the July Uprising.

Manikganj’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury issued this order on Thursday after police produced Durjoy before the court at around 3:30pm and sought a 10-day remand.

Women and Children Tribunal’s Special Public Prosecutor Humayun Kabir conducted the remand hearing on behalf of the state while Advocate Nazrul Islam Badsha along with several senior lawyers on behalf of Durjoy opposed the remand petition and applied for bail.

After hearings from both sides, the court granted the remand.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Bulbul Ahmed Golap stated that on December 3, a case was filed against Durjoy under the Explosives Act at Manikganj Sadar Police Station by a person named Sadikul Islam Rabbi.

According to the case details, former MP Durjoy was the one who ordered the attack on the student movement. Following his orders, attacks and shootings were carried out on students and the public.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, Durjoy was arrested by police from Lalmatia, Dhaka.

Since the change in political landscape, the former cricketer—who became involved in Awami League politics and was Bangladesh’s first Test cricket captain—had not been seen in public.

In the 2014 10th parliamentary election, Durjoy was elected as a lawmaker for the first time from the Manikganj-1 constituency with the boat symbol. He was re-elected in the following parliament.

However, in the 2024 12th parliamentary election, the Awami League did not nominate him.

On August 5, 2024, after the fall of the government, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Durjoy on charges of corruption.

On September 26, the ACC summoned the bank account details of Durjoy and his wife Farhana Rahman. On October 3, the court imposed a travel ban on both of them.

Later, on December 18, the anti-corruption agency filed a case against Durjoy on charges of acquiring illegal wealth.

Earlier, on January 21, the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court ordered the confiscation of a 2,523-square-foot flat, land, and three cars registered under Naimur Rahman Durjoy’s name in Lalmatia, Dhaka.
