Former Awami League Member of Parliament Shafiqul Islam Opu was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday, August 17. Opu, who previously represented Jhenaidah-2 constituency, was taken into custody from his residence in the Dhanmondi area.
Opu faces charges, including vandalism and arson, in connection with an attack on a BNP office in Jhenaidah. These charges are part of a broader investigation that has seen multiple Awami League leaders detained by authorities under the interim government’s crackdown.
A team from Jhenaidah traveled to Dhaka to arrest the former lawmaker, who was reportedly involved in instigating violence during the 2024 student-led protests. He is expected to be presented before a court today, August 18.
Opu, who served as the president of the Jhenaidah district Awami League unit after the death of former MP Abdul Hay, has faced increasing scrutiny for his role in various incidents in the region.
