Former MP of Jhenaidah-2 and district Awami League president Sofiqul Islam Apu has been put on two-day police remand in connection with the vandalism and arson at Aktar Pharmacy in Jhenaidah town.
Apu was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court after being shown as being arrested in the case.
The investigation officer requested five days’ remand for questioning. After the hearing, Judge Md. Wajibur Rahman rejected Apu’s bail plea and granted a two-day remand.
Earlier, on Sunday afternoon, Apu was arrested from his residence in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, by the Detective Branch (DB) of the police.
A team from Jhenaidah traveled to Dhaka to arrest the former lawmaker, who was reportedly involved in instigating violence during the 2024 student-led protests.
Opu, who served as the president of the Jhenaidah district Awami League unit after the death of former MP Abdul Hay, has faced increasing scrutiny for his role in various incidents in the region.
