All five members of a family, who were severely burned in a gas leak-induced fire in Sutrapur’s Kagoji Tola area of Old Dhaka, have died one after another over the past few days.
The last victim, Ripon Payada, 35, succumbed to his injuries at the Intensive Care Unit of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery around 11:30 pm on Thursday, hospital sources confirmed.
Earlier, Ripon’s three children—one-year-old Ayesha, 14-year-old Rokon Payada, and 16-year-old Tamim Payada—died while undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
His wife, Chandni, 28, passed away on the way to her village home, according to family members.
Resident Surgeon Shaon Bin Rahman said Ripon had sustained 60 per cent burns. The family hails from Rangabali in Patuakhali.
The tragic incident occurred around 1:00 am on July 11, when a fire broke out due to a suspected gas line leak at their rented room on the ground floor of a five-storey building. Zakir Hossain, maternal uncle of Chandni, said the fire spread rapidly while the family was asleep, leaving all five critically injured.
They were rescued and rushed to the Burn Institute, where all eventually died from their injuries.
