Six people were killed and at least two others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a microbus on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway in Baraigram upazila of Natore on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred around 10:00 am on Wednesday in the Tormuj Pump area when a Dhaka-bound microbus from Meherpur collided with a cement-laden truck coming from the opposite direction.
The impact completely wrecked the microbus, killing five passengers, including the driver, on the spot.
The deceased microbus driver has been identified as Rubel Hossain, 32, from Gangni upazila in Meherpur. The identities of the other victims, four women and one man, have not yet been confirmed.
Baraigram Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ismail Hossain confirmed the deaths and said all the victims were passengers in the ill-fated microbus. One of the critically injured passengers died after being taken to Baraigram Upazila Health Complex, while another was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Eyewitness Mizanur Rahman stated that the microbus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it crashed into the oncoming truck.
The truck has been seized, but the driver managed to flee the scene. Natore Fire Service and police jointly conducted the rescue operation and transported the injured and deceased to nearby hospitals.
