The much-anticipated election for 2026-2028 term of Bangladesh Film Artistes Association is being held on Friday, at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) premises.
A festive atmosphere has gripped the film fraternity as artists gather to elect their leadership for the next two years.
Although voting was scheduled to begin at 9am, the process officially commenced at 9:30am and is slated to continue until 6pm.
A one-hour hiatus for prayer and lunch will be observed from 1pm to 2pm. A total of 573 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in this election.
The BFDC premises have been bustling since the morning with the presence of candidates, voters, and their supporters, while the Election Commission has confirmed that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a peaceful voting environment.
The primary contest is between two major panels. One panel is spearheaded by Shiba Shanu and Joy Chowdhury.
The candidates from this panel include Rozina and DA Tayeb for the vice-president positions, Subrata for assistant general secretary, Sony Rahman for organising secretary, and Poly for international affairs secretary.
Jacky Alamgir is contesting for the post of office and publicity secretary, Mushfiqur Rahman Kakon for culture and sports secretary, and Jadu Azad for treasurer.
The opposing panel is led by Arman and Rumana Islam Mukti. Their candidate line-up includes Nuton and Elias Cobra for vice-presidents, Rina Khan for assistant general secretary, Chunnu for organising secretary, and MA Parvez Chowdhury Abir for international affairs secretary.
Rasel Mia is running for the post of office and publicity secretary, Maruf Akib for culture and sports secretary, and Kamruzzaman Kamal for the treasurer position. Besides, 27 candidates, comprising representatives from both panels and independent contestants, are vying for 11 executive committee member positions.
Producer Khorshed Alam Khosru is serving as the Chief Election Commissioner, assisted by Kamal Mohammod Kibria Lipu and BH Nishan.
Notably, Misha Sawdagor and Monowar Hossain Dipjol, who served as the president and general secretary respectively during the previous term, are not contesting for any position in this year’s election.
