Arsene Wenger, FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, has held private discussions with Tabith Awal, President of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), to outline plans for a groundbreaking FIFA Academy in Bangladesh. Despite the nation’s current FIFA ranking of 183, Wenger expressed optimism about the passion for football in the country and FIFA’s commitment to nurturing talent through a new, world-class training facility.
The proposed academy, to be jointly operated by FIFA and the BFF, aims to revolutionise football development in Bangladesh. According to sources close to the discussions, Wenger emphasised FIFA’s vision to provide technical expertise, coaching staff, and operational support to ensure the academy meets global standards. The facility will be open to both national and international students, with a focus on identifying and developing young talent.
A key feature of the initiative is a scholarship programme, which will allow talented players to train at the academy without financial barriers. While not all students will be required to pay fees, those demonstrating exceptional potential will be eligible for fully funded scholarships, ensuring access to top-tier coaching and facilities.
The discussions come as part of FIFA’s broader Talent Development Scheme (TDS), which aims to establish elite academies in all 211 FIFA Member Associations by the end of 2027. Wenger’s visit underscores Bangladesh’s inclusion in this ambitious global project, which seeks to elevate national team football by fostering sustainable talent pathways.
The BFF is set to finalise the agreement at the FIFA Conference on 30 April 2026 in Canada, where further details of the academy’s structure and timeline will be confirmed. A case study highlighting Bangladesh’s potential as a hub for football development is expected to be presented at the conference, showcasing the country’s growing commitment to the sport.
Tabith Awal expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “This collaboration with FIFA and Arsène Wenger’s leadership will be a game-changer for Bangladeshi football. We are determined to harness our nation’s passion and talent to compete on the global stage.”
The initiative has sparked optimism among fans and stakeholders, who see the academy as a vital step toward improving Bangladesh’s football infrastructure and international standing. With FIFA’s backing and Wenger’s expertise, the project could mark a turning point for the sport in the country.
