Bangladesh Cable Shilpa Limited (BCSL) is well positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for fiber optic cables in the country, with opportunities for expansion both locally and internationally, said Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Posts, Telecommunications, and ICT Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb.
During a recent visit to the company’s Khulna facility, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb discussed the opportunities for BCSL to tap into the fiber optic boom and outlined the necessary steps to stay competitive in an evolving industry.
“Bangladesh requires 500,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables to meet future digital communication demands, while the country currently has only 150,000 kilometers in place,” said Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb.
Additionally, 75 percent of the existing network remains overhead, creating vulnerabilities during adverse weather conditions. Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb emphasized the importance of moving these connections underground to improve safety and reliability, presenting a key opportunity for BCSL to increase its fiber optic cable production.
Founded in 1972, BCSL has a long history of producing telecom copper cables and has since expanded its product range to include optical fiber cables, high-density polyethylene telecom ducts, and overhead conductors. Over its 50-year history, BCSL has built a solid reputation in the telecom infrastructure sector, providing essential solutions for both local and national communication needs.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb also pointed to the growing opportunity of integrating the fiber networks of state-owned telecom companies into a unified national “fiber bank.” This integration would streamline infrastructure and enhance connectivity across the country, further increasing the demand for BCSL’s products.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb urged the company to enhance its technologies and focus on meeting the rising demand for fiber optic infrastructure.
With an established production capacity of 50,000 kilometers of telecom cables, 25,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables, 6,500 kilometers of high-density polyethylene telecom ducts, and 600 metric tons of overhead conductors annually, BCSL is well-equipped to expand its operations.
However, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb emphasized that staying competitive in the fiber optic industry will require continued innovation and embracing new technologies. He also recommended that BCSL pursue international certifications for its products to boost its brand value and gain access to new global markets.
BCSL’s solid financial performance further positions it for growth. With a net profit of Tk 28 crore in the fiscal year 2024-25, the company is poised to scale up production and explore both domestic and international opportunities in the fiber optic sector.
At the meeting, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb was joined by Managing Director of Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority AKM Amirul Islam and Managing Director of BCSL Md Shahidul Islam to discuss strategies for expanding BCSL’s role in the fiber optic industry.
