Police have arrested a female student in connection with the murder of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Prime Asia University, in Banani.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman said the accused, Faria Haque Tina (20), is one of two women implicated in the case.
According to local Banani Police Station chief AKM Mainuddin, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1) picked Tina from her residence in Jagannathpur of Nadda in Dhaka.
Police confirmed that the arrested woman is a student of the English Department at the University of Scholars.
The case’s investigating officer, Mainuddin, sought a five-day remand for the accused. The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court was scheduled to hold a hearing on the application on Friday afternoon in the presence of the accused.
In the remand plea, the investigating officer said that a previously arrested suspect, Mahadi Hasan, had confessed under Section 164 and named Faria Mahbub, alias Tina, as being involved in the murder.
The officer stressed that taking Tina for custodial interrogation is necessary to fully uncover the motive and details of the crime.
Earlier, on April 20, law enforcement arrested three other suspects: Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal (19), Alvi Hossain Zunaid (19), and Al Amin Sani (19), from Dhaka’s Mohakhali Wireless Gate area.
They have already been interrogated in custody.
With the latest arrest, a total of five suspects have now been detained.
The murder occurred on April 19, when Parvez was fatally stabbed near the Prime Asia University campus following a confrontation. According to the case statement, a group of students allegedly called in an external teenage gang after accusing Parvez of laughing inappropriately with a female friend. The confrontation escalated into violence, leading to Parvez’s death.
Parvez was a fourth-year textile engineering student and hailed from Birunia Union in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. His father is Jasim Uddin.
Police said that Parvez’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a murder case with Banani Police Station on the night of the incident. The case names eight suspects, including students of Prime Asia University and outsiders, along with 20 to 30 unidentified individuals.
