Two individuals have been detained in Lalmonirhat municipality area for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.
The detainees are Paresh Chandra Shil, 69, and his son Bishnu Chandra Shil, 35.
The incident reportedly took place around 3pm on Sunday, at a barber shop owned by Paresh Shil near Hanif Paglar Mor in the Lalmonirhat municipal area.
According to local Islamic devotees (Tawhidi Janata), Paresh allegedly made offensive comments about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad directed at a local youth who had come to get a haircut. The incident sparked anger and tension in the area.
Later, an enraged group of locals allegedly beat both Paresh and his son Bishnu before informing the police.
Officers from Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station arrived at the scene and took the father and son into custody. As tensions escalated and locals surrounded the police station, the situation was brought under control with the intervention of the army.
Officer-in-Charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, Nurunnabi, stated, “Two individuals have been detained on charges of hurting religious sentiments. Legal action is being taken against them.”
