Journalist couple Farzana Rupa and Shakil Ahmed, both currently imprisoned in connection with the July murder case stemming from the 2024 anti-government protests, were released on parole Wednesday to attend the funeral of Rupa’s mother.

The couple, both formerly associated with Ekattor TV, were granted a four-hour parole under tight police security. They arrived at Rupa’s family home in Dhariakanda village in Mymensingh Sadar upazila around 9:00 p.m., where an emotionally charged atmosphere unfolded.

Rupa’s mother, Hosne Ara Begum, passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday evening around 7:00 p.m. due to age-related complications.

The journalist couple was arrested on August 21, 2024 from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, following the July uprising.
