BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Zainul Abedin Farroque urged the interim government to quickly arrange the national election on Wednesday, reflecting public demand.
“Understand the people’s pulse—they want an election. Take immediate steps,” he said at a discussion titled “Specific Roadmap for the Jatiya Sangsad Election and Reforms in the State Structure”, organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Pharmacy Association at the Jatiya Press Club.
Farroque alleged that Awami League cohorts are conspiring to delay the election and undermine the interim government.
“Hasina has fled, but her associates remain. Identify those people of the Awami League who are making sinister efforts to obstruct the election and take action against them,” he said.
He added that those involved in the 16-year movement and the July-August mass uprising have a single demand that is a fair election.
Farroque said the BNP wants an election not to regain power, but to restore people’s voting rights which is the core reason behind their 16-year movement.
He noted that while the party has long urged the government to hold elections soon, they are not taking to the streets like others to press their demands.
