Former Democratic Student Union joint convener (expelled) Jane Alam Opu’s family has called an urgent press conference to protest what they allege was his “abduction and torture.”

The move comes after a video of Opu, recently arrested in connection with an extortion case at the residence of a former MP in Dhaka’s Gulshan, went viral on social media. In the footage, he claims that “adviser Asif Mahmud and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement mobilised mobs to engage in extortion.”

However, his family says the confession was coerced. They allege that an armed group from Dhaka’s southern region abducted Opu, physically assaulted him, and forced him to deliver a “false statement” on camera.

The press conference is scheduled to take place at 11 am today (14 August) at the National Museum in Shahbagh.

Opu was arrested on the morning of 1 August from the capital’s Wari area.
