Ex-state minister for planning Shamsul Alam arrested in Dhaka

Former State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam was arrested by detectives from the Mohammadpur area of the capital on Thursday. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrest but noted that the specific case behind the arrest is yet to be disclosed.

Samsul Alam is now in DB custody, he said.

The former state minister was accused in multiple cases linked to the July mass uprising.

He will be produced before the court today.

Dr Alam was appointed as the State Minister for Planning under the technocrat quota in July 2021. Prior to that, he served as a senior secretary and member of the General Economics Division (GED) under the Planning Commission. A renowned economist and recipient of the Ekushey Padak, Dr Alam had a distinguished academic career, serving as a professor at Bangladesh Agricultural University for 35 years.
