Kazim Uddin Ahmed, also known as Dhanu and a former Member of Parliament for Mymensingh-11 (Bhaluka), has been arrested by Jatrabari Police under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He was taken into custody around 3:00am on Thursday from the Aftabnagar area of Dhaka, according to police sources.
The arrest stems from a murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station on 26 August 2024. Investigators report that on 19 July 2024, at approximately 2:00pm, Mohammad Arif (18), a participant in an anti-discrimination protest, was shot in front of a madrasa on Bou Bazar Road in the Uttar Kutubkhali area, which falls under Jatrabari jurisdiction.
Arif sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, the victim’s father, Mohammad Yusuf, filed a case naming 243 individuals. Kazim Uddin Ahmed Dhanu was identified as the 14th accused in the First Information Report (FIR).
Police officials have also disclosed that Dhanu is named in four separate cases involving murder and violence linked to a wave of anti-discrimination protests in 2024.
These demonstrations gained national attention for demanding greater social justice and equality. Authorities allege that the former MP played a key role in inciting or supporting violent activities during these events.
Jatrabari Police confirmed that the arrest was carried out based on intelligence gathering and digital surveillance. Legal proceedings against the former lawmaker are currently underway, and further investigations are in progress.
Kazim Uddin previously served as a parliamentarian representing the ruling Bangladesh Awami League. However, he has remained largely out of the public spotlight in recent years.
