Ex-ministers Anisul, Mosharraf, ex-mayor Ivy remanded in separate cases

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed former ministers – Anisul Huq and Mosharraf Hossain – on remand for different periods in separate cases filed with Shahbagh and Paltan police stations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Mejbah Ur Rahman passed the orders after hearing two separate petitions.

Of the accused, former law minister Anisul Huq was placed on a five-day remand in a case filed over the killing of garment waste (jhut) trader Monir during the July uprising. According to the court sources, trader Moni was shot to death in Chankarpool area of the capital on August 5 last year when he joined the anti-government movement.

His wife filed the murder case with the Shahbagh police station on March 14, 2025.

Anisul Huq was arrested from the capital’s Sadarghat area on August 13 as he, along with Salman F Rahman, was trying to flee the city through the riverway.

In addition, former housing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain and Bangladesh People’s Party Chairman Babul Sardar Chakhari were placed on a three-day remand each in an attempt to murder case.

According to the case documents, Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Badrul Islam Saimon joined a grand rally declared by BNP and its allies in the capital on October 28, 2023.

The rally came under attack, and Saimon got shot in the incident. He filed the case on April 29, 2025, with the Paltan Model Police Station against 245, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Main Uddin Kadir on Wednesday granted a two-day remand to Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, former Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation and former Vice-President of the district Awami League, in connection with the murder of Sajal Mia in Siddhirganj.

Ivy was produced before the court virtually from the Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison in Gazipur.

According to case documents, on July 20 last year, Sajal Mia—an employee at a local shoe factory—was shot dead during a student movement. On May 16 this year, Sajal’s mother, Runa Begum, filed a case naming 216 individuals in connection with the killing.

Ivy was arrested from her residence in West Deobhog on May 9 and sent to prison after being produced in court.
