Ex-mayor Jahangir among two sued for embezzling Tk7,500cr

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) former mayor Jahangir Alam and GCC accounts officer Golam Kibria on charges of embezzling and laundering Tk 7,500 crore.

ACC Assistant Director Md Ashiqur Rahman lodged the case against them with Gazipur ACC office on Monday afternoon.

According to the case statement, from June 27, 2018, to December 31, 2024, a massive amount of public funds was embezzled from various projects of the city corporation.

These funds were siphoned from government development allocations and the city corporation’s revenue accounts and laundered abroad through sophisticated schemes.

The complaint states that Jahangir and Kibria conspired together and abused their power to embezzle over Tk 7,500 crore.

ACC Gazipur Deputy Director Bayezidur Rahman Khan said, “Following instructions from ACC headquarters, an investigation was conducted and all relevant evidence and information were verified before the case was filed. Preliminary investigations have found that hundreds of crores in fake bills were raised through 23 contracting firms, which were proven to be entirely fraudulent.”

The anti-graft watchdog stated that investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken against anyone corrupt persons.
