An expelled local Juba Dal leader was reportedly shot and killed in a brutal attack outside his house in Daulatpur of Khulna on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was Mahbubur Rahman Molla, 50, a former vice-president of Daulatpur thana unit Juba Dal.
Witnesses said Mahbubur was cleaning his private car in front of his house in Maheshwarpasha Paschim Para area of Daulatpur at around 2pm when three men on a motorcycle approached him.
The attackers, wearing helmets, shot Mahbubur before cutting the veins of his both legs to ensure his death.
Imam Hossain, general secretary of Daulatpur thana unit BNP, has confirmed the incident. The body of the deceased was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where family members and supporters from the BNP, Juba Dal, and Chhatra Dal gathered after hearing the news.
Mir Atahar Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station, said Mahbubur was cleaning his car when three men wearing helmets arrived on a motorcycle. They shot him and then took additional steps to ensure he was dead by cutting the veins in both legs, he added.
Police recovered four empty bullet shells from the scene, and high officials of police have visited the spot, the OC said.
The murder comes just months after Mahbubur was expelled from the Juba Dal in February this year.
He had been involved in a highly controversial incident at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), where he was seen taking stand with a lethal weapon (Ram Da) during a clash between students and locals.
