A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand to former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Judge (in charge) Mohammad Ibrahim Miah of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order on Wednesday. The ACC’s public prosecutor Delwar Jahan confirmed the development.
Kalimullah was remanded following ACC’s appeal to interrogate him for 10 days over allegations of corruption and abuse of power related to the construction of a female student dormitory and a research institute at the university. After hearing both sides, the court approved a five-day remand.
According to ACC, Kalimullah and other accused changed the building designs and contracted projects worth over Tk 30 crore without obtaining the required government ministry approval.
Earlier on August 6, Kalimullah was arrested from a residence in Mohammadpur by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB).
A case, filed in June, over allegedly embezzling Tk 4 crore from development projects at Begum Rokeya University, implicating two former BRUR VCs Professor Kalimullah, Professor AKM Nur Un Nabi, and three others.
