A Dhaka court on Sunday placed four youths, including so-called student movement coordinator Riyad, on seven days’ remand and sent a teenager to a child development centre in an extortion case.
The judge granted the remand when police produced them before the court seeking 10-day remand for interrogation.
Those remanded are Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman alias Riyad, Md Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadab, and Ibrahim Hossain Munna. The teenager sent to a child development centre is Aminul Islam.
Earlier, the five leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were hunted down by police following allegations of extortion.
Later, on Saturday night, a case was filed against them with Gulshan Police Station on a charge of demanding Tk 5 million in extortion from former MP Shammi Ahmed. They were shown arrested in the case.
Anjuman Ara, duty officer of Gulshan Police Station, said the case was filed by Siddiq Abu Zafar, husband of Shammi Ahmed.
According to the case statement, Riyad along with other youths allegedly identifying themselves as ‘coordinators’, demanded Tk 5 million on July 17. That day, they allegedly took Tk 1 million.
Abu Zafar informed police when they came to his residence to take money again. Police rushed to the scene and arrested them red-handed.
