The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Rohingya people, marking eight years since the start of the ongoing crisis. In a briefing held in Dhaka, UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner Raouf Mazou addressed the international community, providing an update on the situation in Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Mazou’s presentation, described as sobering yet inspiring, emphasized the importance of empowered and representative voices from the Rohingya community in driving sustainable solutions.
The EU delegation, which also participated in the Stakeholder Dialogue in Cox’s Bazar, reiterated its support for humanitarian efforts, development initiatives, and the pursuit of accountability for human rights abuses.
Politically, the EU continues to advocate for both funding for humanitarian aid and the enforcement of sanctions aimed at addressing human rights violations. However, Mazou noted that the crisis demands more than just ongoing support—it requires concerted global action to bring about lasting change and alleviate the suffering of the displaced Rohingya population.
