Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s remarkable innings finally came to an end on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, but not before he had laid down a commanding platform for his side. Resuming the day on the back of a brilliant century crafted on Day 1, Shanto added crucial runs before being dismissed for 148 — an innings that will stand as one of his finest in Test cricket.

His dismissal came in the morning session, with veteran Angelo Mathews taking a sharp catch in the slips off the bowling of Asitha Fernando. The right-arm pacer had been probing with good rhythm, and finally managed to break through Bangladesh’s captain after a marathon effort. Shanto faced 279 balls in total, displaying remarkable composure, concentration, and leadership throughout his stay.

Coming in on Day 1 when Bangladesh were in deep trouble at 45 for 3, Shanto played a captain’s knock of the highest quality. He steadied the innings with patience and maturity, building solid partnerships and frustrating the Sri Lankan bowlers for hours. His footwork against spin and discipline against pace were key to blunting the hosts’ attack.

By the time he was dismissed, Bangladesh had reached a commanding position with the score reading 309 for 4, and his innings had firmly shifted the momentum in their favour.

Mushfiqur Rahim played a crucial support role from the other end, helping maintain control in the middle. Together, they kept the scoreboard ticking and ensured Bangladesh didn’t let the early damage spiral further. While Mushfiq is still at the crease, Shanto’s departure marks the end of a defining phase of the innings.

For Bangladesh, Shanto’s 148 was more than just runs on the board — it was a statement of leadership and grit. His knock under pressure showed his growth not only as a batter but also as the leader of a developing Test side. The team will now look to build on this platform, aiming for a total that can challenge Sri Lanka on a turning Galle pitch.

As the match progresses, all eyes will be on how the middle and lower order take the baton forward. But no matter what follows, Shanto’s knock has already set the tone for Bangladesh in this crucial Test.
