Chittagong University has launched an electric shuttle service to ease student transportation within the campus.
The service was inaugurated at 10am on Tuesday by Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Yahya Akhtar.
Two contracting companies – Ma Enterprise and Our Green Campus – have jointly running the project. Initially, six vehicles have been put into operation. These vehicles will run in a circular route from Zero Point to the Law Faculty, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Biological Sciences, girls’ dormitories, and forestry areas. Each vehicle can accommodate 13 to 17 students at a time. Students will be required to pay a fixed fare for using the service as determined by the university administration.
At the inauguration, Vice-Chancellor Yahya Akhtar stated that the electric shuttles are easy to operate and environment friendly. The fare has been set in a way so that students can avail the service at a lower cost compared to rickshaws.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md Kamal Uddin mentioned that although six vehicles have been launched initially, four more will be added next week. If successful, the university plans to introduce 20 additional vehicles by June.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan, Proctor Professor Tanveer Mohammad Haider Arif, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Enayet Ullah Patwari were also present.
