At least eight people were injured in a violent clash between two rival factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Munshiganj’s Munshikandi area on
Friday night.
The confrontation, which erupted around 8pm, involved supporters of BNP leaders Wahid Molla and Uzir Ali from the Anandaipur area. The two groups reportedly clashed
over long-standing political rivalries for local dominance.
The victims have been identified as Shahidul Madbor, 45, Majnu Sarkar, 55, Shamim Sarkar, 27, Jahangir Sarkar, 35, Nazrul Sarkar, 65, Sharif Madbor, 65, Sohel, 35, and Liton, 25. Sohel and Liton sustained critical injuries and were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to police and hospital officials.
Dr. Masud Parvez, an emergency doctor at Munshiganj General Hospital, confirmed that eight gunshot victims had been treated, with two requiring serious attention for head injuries. “They were referred to Dhaka for further treatment,” he said.
Residents reported that the clash was the result of previous disputes between the factions over control of the area.
BNP leader Uzir Ali, speaking to the media around 11pm, claimed his group was attacked unprovoked. “This wasn’t a two-sided fight. Wahid Molla’s men initiated the attack and fired on my people,” he alleged.
However, Wahid Molla, from the opposing faction, denied the claim and described the violence as mutual. “The other group attacked my supporters first, which escalated into the clash,” he said.
Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge M Saiful Alam confirmed the incident and stated that police forces had been deployed in the area to restore order following the violence.
