The Election Commission has confirmed that Bangladesh’s National Identity Database is now completely secure, with no remaining cases of dual NID ownership. Director General of the EC’s NID Wing, ASM Humayun Kabir, made the announcement during a press briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban on Monday.
“We’ve successfully identified and resolved 586 cases of duplicate NIDs by deactivating secondary cards while restoring original ones,” Kabir stated. “Currently, we can confirm no citizen holds multiple NIDs, though we remain vigilant for any future occurrences.”
The EC’s decisive action follows its resolution earlier this month to address longstanding duplication issues, with the technical implementation completed within two weeks. The comprehensive database now securely manages records for over 125 million citizens.
Regarding data security – a persistent concern following past breaches – Kabir assured robust safeguards: “Our 24/7 operational data centre maintains multiple security layers, including regular system updates and maintenance protocols.”
The NID chief emphasised continuous monitoring, stating, “We’ve implemented all necessary protective measures. Currently, the system faces no security vulnerabilities, and we’re committed to preventing any data leaks or damage during daily operations.”
Looking ahead, Kabir pledged sustained efforts to maintain database integrity, ensuring citizen information remains protected against emerging digital threats.
