Torrential early morning rains inundated parts of Dhaka on Thursday, bringing the capital to its knees for hours. The relentless rainfall, lasting nearly two hours since dawn, transformed roads into waterways and crippled the city’s morning rush, causing severe suffering for commuters and pedestrians alike.
Office-goers were seen wading through knee-deep waters, while others amongst them huddled under makeshift shelters, their morning routines derailed.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded 20mm rainfall, with meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque warning of further rain showers in the evening. However, conditions are expected to improve by Friday, he added.
While the rains have offered respite in the midst of the recent heatwave, the aftermath has proved brutal for Dhaka residents, especially commuters, with traffic brought to a standstill in several parts of the capital due to waterlogged roads.
