Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) celebrated its 40th founding anniversary on Friday.
The anniversary event took place at 4pm in the Teachers’ Lounge of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) cafeteria. Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Saima Haque Bidisha attended as the chief guest and cut the anniversary cake alongside DUJA founding member Khairuzzaman Kamal.
In her remarks, Prof Bidisha praised campus journalists for their integrity and balance in reporting both the shortcomings and the positive developments of the university. “Reporting objectively, above bias and controversy, is not easy—but our campus journalists are doing it well,” she said. She also emphasised that the administration often benefits from journalists’ findings, which help in decision-making.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor emphasised the importance of training programmes to enhance the skills of future journalists. She proposed organising workshops by involving the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, university departments, and experienced journalists. Such initiatives, she noted, would enable young reporters to work with greater objectivity and professionalism.
Newly elected DUCSU Vice President Md Abu Sadik Kayem stated, “We are not leaders, but servants of the students. During times of repression, including the July uprising, DUJA members stood by students and played a key role in amplifying their nine-point charter of demands.”
University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed acknowledged the critical role of campus reporters. “They identify our mistakes, offer advice, and help guide us through constructive criticism. We want to initiate training programmes for journalists to further their impact on campus development,” he said.
Founding DUJA member Khairuzzaman Kamal recalled the early days of the organisation and its resilience in facing numerous challenges since its inception.
DUJA President Mohiuddin Mujahid Mahi reflected on the journey, stating, “We’ve faced many challenges, but none could shake our commitment. We believe our integrity and fearless journalism will continue to guide both the university and society forward.”
