Jalal Ahmad Jalal, a Vice President (VP) candidate in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, has been sent to jail following a court order in an attempted murder case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhajur Rahman made this decision on Wednesday after the investigating officer and Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Asadul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station appeared in court and requested that Jalal be kept in custody.
Although Jalal applied for bail, the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application and ordered Jalal to be detained.
Earlier, early Wednesday, allegations surfaced against Jalal for assaulting his roommate, Md Robiul Haque, by hitting him with a broken tube light and causing serious injuries.
Following the incident, the provost of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Md Sirajul Islam, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station accusing Jalal of attempted murder. In addittion, Hall Provost Dr Sirajul announced Jalal’s immediate expulsion, calling the act “barbaric.”
According to the police report, Jalal Ahmed, a student of the 2013-14 session, and his roommate Robiul Haque, from the 2018-19 session, shared room 462 in Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall at Dhaka University.
Being the senior student, Jalal frequently harassed Robiul, disturbing his studies and sleep. When Robiul protested, Jalal reportedly assaulted and threatened him.
The incident began in the early hours of August 27, around 12:30am, while Robiul was sleeping. Jalal entered the room, dragging chairs and making loud noises. When Robiul asked him to lower the noise as he planned to go to the library in the morning, Jalal became angry.
At one point, Jalal attacked Robiul with the sharp broken pieces of the tube light, inflicting deep cuts on his chest and left hand.
Following the assault, Jalal locked himself inside the room. Meanwhile, other students gathered outside, chanting slogans. After prolonged efforts, the university administration forced Jalal out around 2:30am and handed him over to the police.
