Dhaka University metro station will remain closed from 5:00pm today (Monday) due to anticipated crowd pressure surrounding an event commemorating the July mass uprising.

The decision was announced on Sunday through a notice issued by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), which operates Dhaka city’s metro rail service.

According to the DMTCL statement, the closure is a precautionary measure in response to the large gatherings expected around the university campus, where the July uprising reawakening event is scheduled to take place. Authorities fear overcrowding and possible chaos at the station during peak hours.

The closure is for today only, and regular service is expected to resume tomorrow. The last metro train will depart from Motijheel station at 9:40pm as scheduled.

DMTCL further stated that similar decisions have been taken in the past whenever large public gatherings are expected in the Dhaka University area.
