Dhaka University has expelled Ali Hossain, a student of the Sociology Department from the 2020–21 session, for six months after he threatened to “gang-rape a female student” who had filed a writ petition in the High Court over the DUCSU elections.
The suspension was based on the recommendation of the university’s Proctorial Investigation Committee.
University officials confirmed it is the highest penalty that can be imposed under the proctor’s jurisdiction. Hossain, who holds class roll number 54 and registration number 2020212768, is a resident student of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall.
The case has also been referred to the university’s Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee for further action. Following the incident, the University Teachers’ Network (UTN) held a press conference in front of Madhur Canteen, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused and placing a 13-point charter of demands regarding the DUCSU election process.
