Thousands gathered under the night sky in Dhaka to witness a spectacular aerial celebration marking Bengali New Year 1432, where lights and shadows told the story of a ‘New Bangladesh’.

The highlight of the evening — a stunning and unconventional drone show — began at Manik Mia Avenue on Monday shortly after a traditional New Year concert concluded.

Titled “New Year, New Bangladesh,” the 14-minute show was a joint initiative by the Government of Bangladesh and the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.

Featuring 2,600 synchronized drones, the performance presented 12 symbolic motifs, combining artistry and advanced technology to deliver more than just entertainment. It stood as a significant moment in China-Bangladesh friendship.

The first visual paid tribute to the heroes of the 2024 mass uprising that led to the fall of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian regime.

It was followed by emotive depictions of liberation, the heroic sacrifice of youth icon Abu Sayeed, women’s empowerment, indigenous culture, popular solidarity, and global awareness.

One of the show’s most poignant moments came with an image expressing solidarity with Palestine, drawing a deeply emotional response from the audience.

Blending technology, history, and humanity, the drone show evoked a powerful mix of emotion, memory, and hope. Among the standout visuals were a bird escaping from a cage, symbolizing the people’s longing for freedom; a tribute to women’s strength and resilience; and musical symbols from the uprising that emphasized national unity.

The operation was led by 13 Chinese drone experts and a six-member technical team, who had been preparing since February. The drones were flown with remarkable precision, ensuring both safety and technical excellence.

Beyond its dazzling visuals, the show served as a bold reflection of Bangladesh’s contemporary political reality, its humanitarian concerns, grassroots movements, and deepening global connections. The audience responded with standing ovations and thunderous applause, visibly moved by the display.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen, senior Bangladeshi government officials, and diplomats from various foreign missions.
