The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident where police used force to disperse a procession of engineering students in front of the Intercontinental Hotel in Dhaka.

This was stated in an office order signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali on Thursday.

Additional Police Commissioner (Logistics, Finance, and Procurement) Hasan Md. Showkat Ali has been appointed as the Chairman of the investigation committee. The members include Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic-North) Sufian Ahmed, and Deputy Police Commissioner (Finance) Sadeq Ahmed has been named as the Member Secretary.

The order stated that on Wednesday, students from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and other engineering universities gathered at Shahbag to press for their demands. At one point, when they began heading towards the chief adviser’s residence, Jamuna, police stopped them in front of the Intercontinental Hotel. The police then used force to disperse the procession.

The DMP stated that the committee has been formed to analyse CCTV footage of the incident, review evidence and testimonies, and consider the circumstances to determine the justification and extent of the force used by the police.

The committee has been instructed to identify the actual cause of the incident and determine the responsibilities of the police officers on duty, and submit a report with recommendations within the next three working days.
