Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has vowed that no one will get away with mob violence in the capital.
Speaking at a “Meet the Press” event in Dhaka on Wednesday, the newly appointed commissioner made the remarks in his first press conference since taking charge on 17 May.
“Top criminals will be brought under the law,” he said.
On crime control, he added, “The political identity of offenders will not be considered. Special drives are underway to catch extortionists, terrorists, and juvenile gangs.”
Strict drives are underway against extortionists, armed terrorists, drug dealers, and those involved in online gambling and fraud, he said adding that the DMP’s “zero tolerance” policy is in force against mugging and all forms of extortion.
Highlighting traffic congestion as one of the capital’s biggest problems, he said various action plans have been taken to modernise and streamline traffic management.
Awareness campaigns are being conducted among drivers and pedestrians. The traffic management system has been made technology‑driven, with AI‑based cameras installed at key intersections, he told the press conference.
Prosecutions are now being carried out based on video footage of traffic law violations, which is increasing compliance on the roads, he further said.
The new commissioner noted that citizens can now file general diaries (GD) online, share crime‑related information through the “Hello DMP” platform, and that the “Hotel Boarder Information System” has been introduced to identify suspects and criminals staying in hotels.
Efforts are underway to enhance technological capacity to make the DMP more people‑friendly, dynamic, and accountable, he added.
Crimes such as mugging, drug proliferation, extortion, juvenile gang violence, online gambling, cyber fraud, and hacking have become new challenges for the DMP. To combat these, the DMP launched a special drive on 1 May, he informed.
The force is working to prevent technology‑based crimes including cyber hacking, cyber bullying, online gambling, and fraud, while strengthening its cyber unit to ensure citizens’ digital security.
He further said that the Digital Forensic Lab, recently established under the DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, has received recognition from the ICT Ministry. The lab will play a vital role in investigating cases under the Cyber Security Act.
