India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday strongly condemned the vandalisation of Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home – Rabindra Kachharibari – by a mob on June 8, 2025, describing it as a “despicable” act and a “disgrace to the memory” of the Nobel Laureate.

They went on to say that the “attack falls in the broad pattern of systematic attempts by extremists to erase the symbols of tolerance, and eviscerate the syncretic culture and the cultural legacy of Bangladesh.”

They went on to urge the interim government “to rein in the extremists, and take strict action against the perpetrators to prevent recurrence of such incidents that sadly have become a repetitive feature.”

Aa group of people attacked the Rabindra Kachharibari in the upazila on June 8. The attack stemmed from a quarrel between the staff and a local visitor over motorcycle parking on Sunday, according to police and locals.
