The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed a case against the director of the Al Aqaba Multipurpose Cooperative Society on charges of embezzling about Tk 400 crore from customers and laundering money ‘through fraud’.

In a press release on Thursday afternoon, the CID, without naming the accused, said that a case was filed with the Madarganj Police Station in Jamalpur on August 14 under the Money Laundering Prevention Act against the director of Al Aqaba Multipurpose Cooperative Society and their associated institutions.

The accused took money from about 13,000 to 14,000 customers from different areas of Jamalpur and neighboring districts by luring them of higher profits in a short period of time than banks. They collected around Tk 400 crore from the customers under the guise of various cooperative societies and it has been initially proven.

The societies collected money by promising monthly returns of Tk 1200 to 1500 per lakh and initially gave limited profits to the customers, but later they stopped, and the owners, officers and employees of the association locked the offices.

The CID investigation revealed that almost all the directors of the association laundered the money and established various institutions and bought 3,113 decimals of land. Of these properties, there was a brick kiln named Alpha Auto Bricks on 15 acres of land in Goherpara Mouza under Sadar Thana of Jamalpur district, and a garment factory named Alpha Dresswear on 350 decimals of the land in Gazipur South Salna Mouza.

Moreover, there are 9 plots in the Bashundhara residential project under the name of Alpha Developer and Alpha Dresswear. The remaining properties are in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Jamalpur districts.

Following the plea of CID’s money laundering investigation officer, the Jamalpur Sessions Judge Court has ordered the attachment of these properties. The court also issued a travel ban on the relevant individuals from traveling abroad.
